The American dog tick (Dermacentor variabilis) is right at home in most states east of the Rocky Mountains. It is also commonly found in California, Idaho and Washington, as well as Canada.

The American dog tick is a known transmitter of Rocky Mountain spotted fever. This is also a zoonotic disease, which means it can infect people as well as pets.
